What is Functional Medicine?

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique that has been used for over 2,000 years. It involves the insertion of very fine hair thin, sterilized, disposable needles into acupuncture points on the body. In Chinese Medicine the body contains meridians or pathways that contain Qi, Qi is a vital life force that flows through our bodies. When our Qi is balanced and flowing smoothly we are in good health. It is when our Qi gets stuck or we become deficient in Qi that we may start to see certain health issues manifest such as pain and or physical and emotional disharmonies. When this imbalance occurs the acupuncture needles then activate particular acupuncture points based on an individuals unique needs to bring the Qi back to health and harmony, allowing the body to heal itself. Acupuncture is also used as a wonderful preventative medicine, if your feeling great already acupuncture can be used to keep your body healthy and strong.

Lifestyle and Nutritional Support

At Ritual, we often talk about The Five M’s: Meals, Movement, Mindset, Medicine, and Maintenance. We’ll look at each of these aspects of your life to see where adjustments can be made, based on your particular body and needs. No matter how healthy you are, most people can benefit from some small changes. You might be missing nutrients that you can easily get by adding certain foods to your shopping list. Or, you might need to add a vitamin or herbal supplement. You might beenfit from an adjustment to your movement schedule, or trying a different type of movement. Some patients are even getting too much exercise, and not enough rest. We’ll help you experiment with your lifestyle to find what works best for you.

Shiatsu Bodywork & Massage Therapy

Shiatsu is a unique form of bodywork that provides the satisfaction of touch along with a profound energy-balancing experience. It is based on thousands of years of Eastern philosophy and methods of healing. Shiatsu directly treats the meridian pathways within the body that channel qi, blood, and essence. We experience this energy in the form of movement, communication, respiration, digestion, thoughts, feelings and spirituality. Any blockage or stagnation of energy within the meridians can result in physical, psychological and emotional disease. Shiatsu helps you balance your energy on all levels, while experiencing a profoundly relaxing and clinically therapeutic musculoskeletal treatment. Shiatsu technique is used depending on the musculoskeletal conditions and can be used in combination with the above treatments.

Cupping (Ba Guan)

Cupping or Fire Cupping is an ancient method of healing used for thousands of years in ancient China and around the world. Cupping is used to release any excess or stuck energy in the body that could be causing a disharmony. Cupping can be used to treat a variety of health conditions ranging from the common cold to musculoskeletal pain.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine is a vast and incredible healing modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for over 2,000 years. Hundreds of herbs can be used alone, or strategically together in custom formulas, to address many health conditions. Our herbs are safe, of the highest quality, and can greatly enhance your healing, especially when used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments.

Moxabustion or ‘Moxa’

Moxa is one of the oldest healing technique used in Chinese Medicine dating back thousands of years. Moxa is the Chinese Herb Ai Ye commonly known as Mugwort. Moxa is commonly used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments and is a form of fire heat that when placed over acupuncture points creates a stimulating healing effect. The heat is created by burning the mugwort leaves and applying it directly or indirectly over the body. People commonly report moxabustion to be very soothing and relaxing.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is very similar to Cupping in its effects and is also an ancient healing technique. Gua Sha consists of the practitioner using a special gua sha tool or spoon to rub the skin in order to release any excess or stagnation in the body that could be causing pain or disharmony.

The ancient wisdom of Chinese Medicine combined with modern science: this is a powerful force for healing. Ready to get started?
